kahuku football coach sterling carvalho lawsuit

See, when you read the details of this Kahuku Football Coach Sterling Carvalho Lawsuit, you might feel sympathy for Carvalho, but it is not just that simple, actually. See, sure, there were mistakes made by him that made the whole situation even worse, but right now, he is suing the Hawaii Department of Education to prove otherwise. And if you’re not following up with this case yet, you should do that because this is how you’ll get to know how politics is being played out in sports and the educational environment.

Who is Sterling Carvalho, anyway?

See, to understand the full picture of this case, we must go back to the very beginning, and for that, just know that Sterling Carvalho was not just a nameless face in Hawai‘i high school football. And? Well, he was the one-time head coach of the Kahuku High School Red Raiders, arguably the most rugged and stable team of the whole state. Since he was part of that team, sure enough, that was a big reason why the team reached the state finals four times in a row. They ended up winning the trophy three times, among which was that overwhelming 2021 win. So definitely, he was very competent as a ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌coach, no doubt about that.

Then 2025 happened, and everything changed.

So, What Actually Went Wrong?

Unexpectedly,‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the Department of Education (DOE) let him go in March 2025. Why exactly? Did he do something really wrong? In actuality, it all started with the parents’ complaint. The parent of a player alleged that Carvalho threatened him and made the atmosphere kinda “hostile.” And then, as per the local stories, see, the parent was putting up negative posts about Carvalho on the internet, and it is said that Carvalho confronted him about ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌it, and that’s when things got out of hand.

But when that happened, sure enough, that was the point when the Department of Education decided to act promptly by removing him from his ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌position.

Carvalho Didn’t Take It Quietly!

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ July 2025, he decided by himself not to accept what was offered to him. How and why? Well, see, a legal action was brought against five groups by him: the Department of Education (DOE), state superintendent Keith Hayashi, a school administrator, the student, and the student’s father. He went on to claim a bunch of things in this lawsuit, like his name was defamed, his contract was terminated without giving any particular and valid reason, and that he also suffered great emotional and psychological damage due to the whole situation.

He even tried to get reinstated immediately. How?

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ order to expedite the matter, he filed a request with the court for a temporary injunction. To put it simply, he was seeking permission from the judge to be allowed to go back to coaching immediately. That’s all!

But the thing is, when this case progressed forward, see, the court rejected the motion on August 2, 2025. And as you can pretty much tell, the decision indicates that the plaintiff, Carvalho, failed to demonstrate with sufficient evidence that he was going to win the case in the future with certainty, or that the damage he was going to suffer could not be repaired by way of compensation. Therefore, he was not allowed to go back to the bench. The games went on without ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌him.

What Exactly Led To His Firing?

It’s‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ all about that one complaint. A parent, having criticized Carvalho on social media, and then Carvalho being accused of confronting him afterward. It was this confrontation that led to the ‘hostile environment’ claim. The school conducted an investigation of their own, and it seems that their finding were sufficient to make the decision of his ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌termination.

Though, as of right now, this case is still ongoing, and we’ll keep you posted with the updates whenever something new comes up.
