What Are Private WoW Servers?
Private servers are unauthorized versions of World of Warcraft. They are set up by people who use Blizzard game files, permitting everyone to join without any payment of subscription fees.
For such server types, Blizzard has a long history of shutting them down. A well-known closure occurred in 2016 when Blizzard forced the shutdown of the very popular private server called Nostalrius. And that eventually led Blizzard to start work on launching WoW Classic in 2019. And now it seems like Turtle WoW is heading in a similar direction.
What Makes Turtle WoW Popular?
Turtle WoW was launched back in 2018, and at its peak had 70,000 players online at the same time. A huge number compared to its official brothers, no.
The reason is that it is more than just an actual WoW clone. There were added races, zones, quests, and even a dungeon-type expansion called Mysteries of Azeroth. Turtle WoW 2.0 is currently in the works, with the graphics being revamped in Unreal Engine 5, yet keeping the classic WoW aesthetics.
Yet, donations are still enabled in Turtle WoW. Players have the option to donate money and obtain in-game benefits through a web store. Although it is not quite trading the game, it still brings income. This is among the major causes that led Blizzard to file a lawsuit.
Blizzard’s Lawsuit Against Turtle WoW
In the year 2024, Blizzard filed a lawsuit in the Central District of California. The complaint is that Turtle WoW uses Blizzard’s art, code, and trademarks without permission.
According to Blizzard, Turtle WoW is not merely a fan project, but a business using their intellectual property. They state that it causes confusion among players, diverts customers from their official servers, and could even pose security concerns for them. Blizzard says they want to “protect the world we’ve built.”
Turtle WoW’s Response
The servers for Turtle WoW are still running now, with the developer named Torta saying in the official Turtle WoW Discord channel: “Turtle WoW is here to stay. We face challenges all the time, and we’re ready for this one too.”
As of right now, well, the Turtle WoW team keeps on rolling out updates and promoting the server, showing they are not quite ready to roll over just yet.
Community Reactions
The community in the gaming world has taken a quick interest in the lawsuit. The case is being talked about by many YouTubers and players. Bellular Warcraft, for instance, a big name in content creation, posited that Blizzard might actually be preparing their own Classic Plus version, which could have given it a motive to go after the private servers at this point.
Though the thing is, players are divided. Some support Turtle WoW by saying it adds creativity to the game. Others stand with Blizzard, who state that the company is protecting its own product.
